A new model for fashion.

Our Mission

Through strategic research, policy initiatives, and campaigns, the Model Alliance promotes fair treatment, equal opportunity, and more sustainable practices in the fashion industry, from the runway to the factory floor. As a small nonprofit, we punch above our weight and our impact is far-reaching. A decade ago, we established child labor protections in the modeling industry and created the first and only industry support line. Today, we’ve served thousands of individuals with work-related concerns and championed legislation that allowed time-barred survivors of sexual assault to hold their abusers accountable, including a former President of the United States.

Our work is centered around the truth that despite fashion’s glamorous façade, the industry is rife with human rights abuses and has been built on the backs of mostly women and girls across the globe who experience debt bondage, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. That’s why we’ve pioneered a new model of labor activism – one that centers workers’ expertise to establish meaningful standards and ensure dignified working conditions in the fashion industry.

Our community occupies a powerful platform to campaign for transformative change. Fashion workers – particularly models, who are literally the faces of the fashion industry – are some of the most visible workers in the world, and the multinational companies we represent have a disproportionate impact on public health, our environment, and working people’s lives. To affect change, we all need to have a voice in our work. That voice can take many forms, from industry surveys to committees and campaigns.

By assisting fashion workers in understanding the laws applicable to them, and by encouraging them to have a voice in their work, the Model Alliance identifies common areas of concern, conducts strategic research with leading research institutions to inform policy initiatives, and educates the industry and the public about our core issues.

From creating protections for models and content creators from financial and sexual exploitation, to calling for transparency and accountability across global supply chains, we need to inject a labor consciousness into fashion. The Model Alliance aims to lead this effort.

Thanks for your support,

 Programs

Community Building, Leadership Development & Education

The Model Alliance hosts events, know your rights and listening sessions, and maintains a social media presence aimed at raising awareness for its core issues. Staff work to build worker leadership by providing opportunities to engage in public speaking, pen essays and op-eds, undergo media training, organize their peers for a rally or event, and more.

Strategic Research and Reports

The Model Alliance partners with leading academic research institutions to assess and better understand issues in the fashion and modeling industries and how they could be addressed. Research partners include the Legal Clinic at Fordham Law School, the Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED) at Harvard University, the Applied Psychology Program for Eating and Appearance Research (APPEAR) at Northeastern University, and The Worker Institute at Cornell University.

Direct Support

The Model Alliance advises working and aspiring models and creative artists on their rights and on the resources available to them. Through MA Support, models report questions and concerns and we refer them to attorneys when necessary. Since 2012, we have provided guidance and support to thousands of individuals.

Legislative Advocacy

We are proud to have a track record of success engaging in legislative advocacy. In 2013, we championed the Child Model Act, which extended labor rights to children who work as models in New York State. In 2018, we championed the Talent Protections Act, which requires talent agencies in California to educate models and other performers about sexual harassment and eating disorders. And in 2022, we championed the Adult Survivors Act, proving a pathway to justice for adult survivors of sexual assault who fall outside the statute of limitations.

The RESPECT Program

In 2018, the Model Alliance developed the RESPECT Program, which invites companies in the fashion industry to make an enforceable commitment to stop harassment and other forms of abuse. RESPECT replicates many of the benefits of unionization without any of the potential legal issues. Under the program, models and creatives would be able to file confidential complaints that will be independently investigated, with real consequences for abusers. There would be training and education so everyone knows their rights. Designed by models and our allies, RESPECT is the only initiative that is based on models’ concerns, experiences and priorities.
